Intensification in aquaculture implies culture conditions that can be sub-optimal for the species’ physiological condition and induce oxidative stress. Furthermore, fast growth diverts resources away from self-maintenance processes such as antioxidant protection and is associated with excessive prooxidant production.
Nutritional strategies aiming to build a balanced antioxidant system will promote an optimal immune response and thus it has become a priority for nutritionists. A first approach is to reinforce the first line of antioxidant defense by micronutrients such as selenium that are determinant to oxidative stress resistance.
A parallel approach is to further control oxidative stress and promote an optimal immune response by the use of functional feed additives based on natural antioxidants in combination with immunostimulants. Selisseo® and Aquastim®, two nutritional interventions to ensure optimal disease resistance and performance, are here described.
