Pathogens can heavily impact livestock production. Pathogens impair feed conversion, reduce growth and diminish overall performance. Coming in all shapes and sizes, pathogens require a diverse approach to inhibit their growth and prevent reproduction. As Antibiotic Growth Promoters (AGPs) are banned in most countries, the demand for alternatives has increased considerably.
Research has shown that different glycerides have a strong inhibiting effect on specific pathogens. Whereas AGPs completely destroy the intestinal microbiome, certain glycerides are able to suppress pathogenic bacteria, such as: E. coli, Salmonella and Clostridium. Other glycerides can stimulate beneficial bacteria, such as: Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium.
Above that, pathogens are unable to develop resistance against glycerides. Indicating that a well-substantiated combination of glycerides may be an all-encompassing approach to control pathogens and improve microbiota composition.
Production efficiency is influenced by many factors like farm management, genetics and nutrition. Farmers are constantly searching for opportunities to improve the performance of their animals. One of these opportunities is to include specific feed additives in the diet with the aim to support animal health and improve production output.
Research has shown that specific chain lengths of fatty acid glycerides have surprisingly selective antibacterial effects. In general, glycerides of short-chain fatty acids are highly effective against Gram-negative bacteria, while glycerides of medium-chain fatty acids are more effective against Gram-positive bacteria such as Streptococcus suis. FRA® Gut Balance contains a smart combination of glycerides of both short-chain and medium-chain fatty acids and is the key to overcome bacterial challenges from both gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria.
