Sodium butyrate is well known for having many effects in several tissues, at the cellular or microbiological level. It can be used as an energy source by epithelial cells lining the intestinal tract, reduce production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and induce the production of enteric hormones. Many of these effects increase gastro-intestinal tract (GIT) health, which is why butyrate is added to feed as performance enhancing supplement.
However, there is variability in the effect of dietary butyrate supplementation, particularly in the physiological responses that can lead to improvements in animal performance. Part of this variation can be due to differences in which regions of the GIT butyrate was delivered.
Discover why precision delivery is so important to maximise butyrate efficacy and find out more about the two main approaches which have been developed to tackle the challenge of enteric butyrate delivery.
Chapter 1. In the right place and at the right quantity – both are essential for butyrate to express its full potential
